What is a Next Generation Network (NGN)?

Next Generation Network (NGN) is a term used to describe some major changes in the telecommunication core and access networks. NGNs are built around the Internet Protocol and therefore the term ‘all-IP' is also sometimes used to describe the transformation towards NGN. NGNs open up a whole new world of services and applications and present significant margin opportunities for channel partners and much more integrated services for end users.

Gamma's Next Generation Network

In late 2005, Gamma started transferring its network from TDM (Time-division Multiplexing) to IP (Internet Protocol) and since 2006 Gamma has been running its traffic over a pre-dominantly soft-switch based network with its carrier class core switching infrastructure located across 6 separate geographic locations in the UK.

Gamma's NGN is currently the largest soft-switch deployment across Europe, carrying around 15% of the UK PSTN traffic. Over 250 million minutes a month of this traffic is pure IP traffic, showing that there is a definite move from TDM to IP network by end users.

Gamma's continued investment in its NGN means that they have been able to pass on strong SLA's to their channel partners, with assurances on core network availability, network and hardware level resilience.

Gamma was the first to role out a NGN in the UK and they have also been ahead of the market in terms of finding and resolving issues with IP Telephony and the carrier has been moving IP telephony into a new era by offering a service level on availability and call quality to its channel partners. This is unique to Gamma, no other provider offers this.

Gamma has been moving its NGN into its second stage with the roll out of new soft-switch equipment in 2009. This will further increase Gamma's capacity and help them deliver more innovative new services and applications like their existing inbound services on geographic numbers and instant SIP trunk provisioning.
